Rethinking-DesignThinking-Health Care

Background
Given the surging cost of US health care and
the decreasing value delivered to the patients, project teams based on
the strategic recommendations stated in the Michael E. Porter book, Redefining Health Care. Creating Value-Based Competition on Results,
designed a national framework for the 5 stakeholders in the health care
realm. Under the direct guidance of Professor Charles Owen, the teams
used structured planning methods and went through the whole process of
defining, analyzing and synthesizing.
Approach
In
dealing with the system, the teams applied the structured planning
methods such as function structure analysis, means-ends analysis and
ends means-ends synthesis. In the final presentation, teams used
personas and stories to demonstrate the benefits of the new integrated
system in comparison with the current broken system.
Solution
Teams
focused on the acute problem of transparency and communication, and
designed a integrated, comprehensive mechanism to enhance information
flow in the health care system. As the employers team, specifically our
goal is to empower the patients to make better health care decisions,
to incentivize them to share health information, enable the employer to
better manage the health care benefits so that higher value can be
achieved at lower costs. Solutions from our employer's team include
employee empowering tools and employer benefit management tools.
Influence
The
whole class presented the final outcome to professional representatives
of the health care world in December 2007. The recommendations from the
teams were submitted by Prof. Owen to the candidates of the 2008 US
presidential campaign. The team will present the work again in the
first Tri-National Workshop on Health Care Systems that will be held in
Stuart Business School of IIT on Feb 28th 2008.
Personal Take-away
As a team member and the Honorary Team Co-leader, I learnt a lot about working in teams.
For
the first time, I tackled an extraordinarily complex and highly
systematic real-life problem that I had no prior knowledge about. The
structured planning method I learnt and applied throughout the process
gave me more confidence in facing this kind of problems in the future.
